Call for Submissions (Calgary): 2012-2013 Season Programming – Downstage

**  CALL TO ARTISTS  **

Now Seeking Submissions for MOTEL and Bird & Stone

Downstage is now seeking submissions for programming the 2012-2013 season in Motel, a flexible 50-seat black-box performance venue located in the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts and Birds & Stone a black box space used for rehearsals or intimate performances on 16th Avenue and 1st Street NW. Emerging and established artists and performing arts companies working in all disciplines who are interested in showcasing their work in EPCOR CENTRE’s Motel or rehearsing / performing in Birds & Stone are invited to submit proposals for consideration. Unfortunately, as demand for the venues generally exceeds the time available, we will not necessarily be able to program all submissions.

Upon the successful scheduling of a proposal, artists/companies will be contacted to arrange more specific details of the tenancy. A venue usage fee is applicable, however, Downstage is committed to ensuring Motel and Birds & Stone are highly affordable and accessible for Alberta’s arts community. All work programmed in the venues maintains its autonomy.

We will confirm receipt of your proposals via email. If you do not receive a confirmation from Downstage within a week of your submission please contact us again.

Interested artists/companies are asked to submit a project proposal about one page in length describing the work to be presented, the artists involved (if known), the ideal presentation dates (please give more than one option) and why Motel or Birds & Stone is the venue of choice for the project. Proposals will be accepted on an ongoing basis until all available dates are filled; however, tentative scheduling of projects will begin in May 2012 and we anticipate availability to become limited very quickly. We are primarily seeking proposals for one or two week time slots, though shorter projects will also be considered. A weekly booking in either space runs Sunday to Saturday, unless otherwise noted.

NEW FOR MOTEL 2012-2013:
Companies with a history of producing work in Motel may request to have two, two-week time slots in the 2012-13 season along with guaranteed access to four weeks for the following season, renewable on an annual basis. Companies interested in this opportunity should include a letter detailing why a firm commitment to a venue would be useful in their work and continued evolution.
