Directing Workshop: Beyond Beginners
with Simon Mallett
SYNOPSIS:
This workshop will be addressing more intermediate and advanced level directing challenges. We will be focusing on actor/director collaboration & communication as well as a host of other topics including the intersection of form and content, the role of director as dramaturg and the relationship of audience and performer as it relates to staging. Previous directing or theatre experience is recommended.
INSTRUCTOR BIO:
Simon is the Founder & Artistic Producer of Downstage, a Calgary-based company that produces Canadian theatre that is socially and politically engaged. He has directed many of the company’s productions including Habitat, Bone Cage, Enoch Arden in the Hope Shelter, Goodness, Bus(t), the World Premiere of Sharon Pollock’s Man Out of Joint and In the Wake, for which he was nominated for the Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding Direction. Simon has also worked as a director with a variety of other theatre companies including Theatre Calgary, Vertigo Theatre, Alberta Theatre Projects, Lunchbox Theatre and New West Theatre. He holds a MFA in Directing from the University of Calgary, an Honours BA in Drama from the University of Guelph, and he is the recipient of The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award and an Enbridge Emerging Artist Award. Simon’s current show, the Downstage Creation Ensemble’s Good Fences is running February 14th through March 4th as part of ATP’s Enbridge playRites Festival.
