International Workshop Series at the Caravan Farm – May 2009
Armstrong, BC
Theatre Replacement, The Caravan Farm Theatre and The Leaky Heaven Circus are very excited to announce that Catherine Alexander of Theatre De Complicite and London’s Central School of Speech and Drama will be our guest instructor for the next instalment of our international workshop series. We met Catherine at the 2007 Magnetic North Theatre Festival where she was teaching a Master Class for Canadian directors.
Catherine Alexander
Catherine Alexander studied drama at Manchester University, trained at L'Ecole Jacques Lecoq (including two years at the Laboratory of Movement Studies) and participated in the National Theatre Studio Young Director's Program.
Her extensive directorial work includes The Man of Iron at Unity Theatre, Liverpool (2001); No Spleen (Edinburgh and Adelaide Festivals, 1998/1999); and The Dreaming of the Bones (as actor and co-director, national tour, 1999). She has worked extensively with Complicite since 1994 on shows including The Chairs (Royal Court and Broadway, 1997) and The Caucasian Chalk Circle (National Theatre and tour, 1997, as assistant director).
Artistic director since 2000 of Quiconque, a company that specializes in drama for and with young people, she has performed in most of its shows. In April 2007 she was actor and director of Fundamental, a work-in-progress showing by Quiconque of a new devised theatre piece at Arts Depot. This work, currently in development, will be based on verbatim interviews with people involved in religious cults.
In 2006 Catherine Alexander won the Jerwood Prize to direct a research project based on Amedée at The Young Vic and worked with Candoco (Arts Depot) on a site-specific dance piece.
The workshop will focus on devising and performance techniques and will be useful for both actors and directors.
