Event:
Call for Directors

Details:

Are you interested in Directing a show for Morpheus Theatre?

Morpheus Theatre invites directors to make proposals for shows to be produced during our 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 seasons. We encourage experienced and passionate directors to submit a letter of interest along with a resume with related theatre experience and background.

Morpheus produces three or four quality shows each year (a farce or comedy, contemporary drama, a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, and this year a pantomimes) on a variety of stages (Victor Mitchell & Joyce Doolittle Theatres at the Pumphouse; and the Easterbrook Theatre at the Community Arts Centre). Because of the need to raise money for a new rehearsal space, we are looking for WELL-KNOWN SHOWS with HIGH AUDIENCE POTENTIAL. Ideally, the shows will appeal to a wide family audience (primarily 12 and up, although under 18 is not the target audience).

Proposals should include the following information:
* Name of Director
* Directing and theatre related experience
* Name of Show
* Playwright of Show
* Cast Size of show, with male/female ratio
* Why you think Morpheus should produce it
* Director's Vision for the show (including overall thoughts about how the show would be staged and any special effects, set ideas, costume ideas, technical considerations)
* Which theatre it would work best in
* Potential challenges
* Any other comments or considerations

At this time, we ask that you don't try to recruit production crew or check on the production rights.

Name /Org: Players de novo
Event:
Seeking professional theatre company to partner in annual event

Details:

Players de novo is a volunteer group from Edmonton’s legal community that organizes the production of an annual play/musical for which the cast is to be made up of local lawyers and judges. The goal is to raise funds, to be shared equally between a non-profit professional theatre company and the Victoria School ’s Foundation for the Arts. We are now in our fourth year, and so far, we have grown every year. Our theatre partner the first year was Workshop West, and our Director was Ron Jenkins . Last year, we were directed by John Hudson and raised money for Shadow Theatre. In May of 2008 our Co-Directors were Troy O’Donnell and Julien Arnold and our theatre beneficiary was the Free Will Players.

Our goals are twofold, to raise funds for the artistic community of Edmonton and to enhance good will and collegiality amongst the legal community. To do that, we rely on our theatre partner to provide the professional expertise and financial administration; the legal community supplies the cast, ticket sales and sponsorships. After three years of successful productions, we are confident we can sell out the Victoria School ’s large theatre, as well as raise significant additional funds in sponsorships and advertising. Last year, our two beneficiaries split approximately $60,000 in net proceeds.

The theatre company must provide the Director, and it would be up to him or her to select the play. We need a large cast (12-15) and lots of humour (some is unintended of course). There is also interest in doing a musical sometime soon. Our productions so far have been “The Mousetrap”, “You Can’t Take it With You”, and “Arsenic and Old Lace”.

We have the theatre booked for Saturday, May 9th, for next year’s show. It is now time to find an interested theatre partner for this year’s production. If your company would like to be considered for this year, please submit a proposal to the writer no later than Saturday, September 20th. You can call Laura Stevens, at 424-9058, or Kevin Mott, at 427-0560, with any additional questions. You might also find it useful to talk to our previous Directors for the inside scoop.

Deadline: TBA

Name /Org: Walterdale Theatre Associates
Event:
Call for submissions - Footlight Festival

Details:

Footlight Festival – Submission Guidelines

The Footlights Festival is a chance to get as many people involved in the Fiftieth Season as possible. However, we do have limited resources, space and person-power. Therefore, all submissions should focus on story and character. Please avoid prop-, set- and costume-heavy shows.

The festival will consist of: Mentored One Acts, Play Readings, ‘Mainstage’ Productions, Round Table Discussions, Workshops and Late Shows

Submission categories:

A) New Work – Will be considered for either the Mentored One-Acts or Play Readings. Scripts must run between 40 & 60 minutes. Preference will be given to scripts that do not call for complicated sets or large amounts of props.

B) Productions – Will be considered for Mainstage. Scripts must run between 50 & 90 minutes. Preference will be given to established works or new works from established playwrights. Scripts must not call for complicated sets or large amounts of props.

We would also like to hear your suggestions for Round Table Discussions.

Finally, the Late Shows will be a variety performance. If you have a sketch, a song, a magic trick or anything other ‘bit’, we’ll try to fit you into the show. Bits should be about 5-7 minutes in length. As we are trying to do as much as possible with few resources, please be aware that there will be limitations. Pieces selected for production will be largely responsible for rehearsing the majority of the show off-site, much like the regional One-Act Festival. Walterdale production personnel can assist in finding rehearsal space if you are in a bind. Budgets for the productions will be small. Walterdale production staff will have their hands full so finding your own stage manager and production manager will be assets. Try to find your own costumer and props person. Basically the more you can bring to the table with your production the better it will fit into the festival.

Send all submissions either by email to the address below or drop them off at the theatre, attention: Artistic Director. Include in your submissions whether it is a New Work or a Production. Include the script, directing résumé, any production personnel you have contacted to be a part of the show, as much detail about set and props requirements as you can, costume requirements and any other pertinent info.

Plays submitted may be selected as productions, mentorship or readings at the discretion of the Artistic Director.

Deadline: September 29th, 2008
Contact:

Send all submissions either by email to walterdalead@yahoo.ca or drop them off at the theatre, attention: Artistic Director. Visit the Walterdale website at www.walterdaleplayhouse.com.

Name /Org: Downstage
Event:
Seeking Proposals for EPCOR CENTRE’s Motel

Details:

Downstage has taken on the exciting role of programming
Motel, a flexible black-box performance venue located in the
EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts, and is seeking
proposals from emerging artists working in all disciplines
who are interested in showcasing their work in the venue
starting in September 2008.

Interested artists are asked to submit a project proposal
at least one page in length describing the work to be
presented, the artists involved, the ideal presentation
dates (more than one option recommended) and why Motel is
the venue of choice for the project. There is no firm
deadline, proposals will be accepted on an ongoing basis
until all available dates are filled, but scheduling of
projects will begin on August 6th and we anticipate date
availability becoming limited very quickly. We are primarily
seeking proposals for one or two week time slots, though
shorter projects (1 to 3 days) will also be accepted, as
opportunities for scheduling such events exist throughout
the season. At present, the dates available for one or two
week runs are:

September 14th-20th
December 14th-20th
February 3rd-14th
April 5th-11th
April 26th-May 16th
May 25th-June 20th
July 13th-August 31st

Selections will be made based on viability, artistic merit,
our goal to program a diverse range of work by a diverse
group of artists as well as on scheduling constraints. We
regret that we will not be able to program all proposed
projects, but we will respond to all proposals once
scheduling decisions have been made. Downstage will then
negotiate an agreement for the use of the space with the
project contact, which may consist of a flat rate rental fee
or a box office sharing agreement. Details of the degree of
additional support to be provided by Downstage (including
possible publicity and production support) will also be
determined on a project by project basis.

This method of programming the venue is taking the place of
standard rentals of Motel, though there will still be a
financial cost associated with the use of the space.
However, Downstage’s programming of the space offers the
possibility for a greater degree of flexibility in terms of
the rental agreement between Downstage and the artists, as
well as for Downstage to potentially provide additional
support to artists presenting their work in Motel.

For more information on the venue and to see a ground plan
of the space, visit www.downstage.ca/motel.html. Downstage
will also continue to operate birds and stone, and standard
rentals for rehearsals and performance continue to be
available for that venue, visit www.downstage.ca/birds.html
for more information.

Thank you for your interest.

Deadline: Open until positions are filled.

www.downstage.ca/motel.html

Please send any questions and submit proposals by e-mail to

2008 – 2009 Season

Messiah on the Frigidaire by John Culbertson (Comedy – 4M, 3W, 1child)
The small town of Elroy, South Carolina is thrust into the evangelical spotlight, when what seems to be the image of Jesus appears on a refrigerator in a trailer park. The discovery by Lou Ann Hightower, her husband Dwayne, and her best friend Betsy, sets into motion a frenzy of conflict, communion and good old fashioned commerce. When the National Investigator turns the appearance into front page headlines, their trailer park becomes a Mecca for miracle seekers, soul searchers and disciples with a decidedly political agenda. Through the ordeal, the three undergo an evolution in their relationships with each other, and they are forced to come to grips with their lowly status in the caste system of the rural south. In a region where! religion is as much a part of life as grits and cotton fields, God surely moves in mysterious ways.

The Dresser by Ronald Harwood (Drama – 10M, 3W)
Sir, the last of the great breed of English actor/managers, is in a bad way tonight. As his dresser tries valiantly to prepare him to go on stage as King Lear, he is having great difficulty remembering who and where he is, let alone Lear's lines. With a Herculean effort on the part of Norman, the dresser, Sir finally makes it on stage and through the performance no thanks to the Luftwaffe in a World War II era English provincial theatre during an air raid. Backstage in his dressing room after the performance, the worn out old trouper dies, leaving his company and his loyal dresser alone. The play is partly based on Ronald Harwood's own experiences as a dresser with the last great actor/manager Sir Donal Wolfitt

Murder at Rillington Place by Louis Hobson (Drama – 10M, 10W)
This is a newly scripted version of the events that took place at 10 Rillington Place in the 1950's in London. The issue: did Timothy Evans really kill his wife and child (for which he was hanged) or was the killer some one who had killed before and would kill again?

Bedtime Stories by Norm Foster (Comedy – 9M, 6F – could be played with 5 actors)
Six different scenes which all feature a bed as their primary focus. A shock radio jock pays a couple five thousand dollars to make love on the air. A woman visits a dying man she feels she hurt years ago. Two men rob a house and discover a shocking secret. An aging rock star is confronted by a groupie. An accident-prone stripper meets with her no-nonsense boss. A woman leaving her husband lectures the movers on the proper way to treat a lady. Fifteen characters and all can be played by only five actors.
