Name or Organization: Arts and Museum Building Operating Grant
Location: Edmonton

Details:

Edmonton Arts and Museum organizations receive support from new facilities grant.

Approximately $950,000 will be allocated to 21 not-for-profit arts and museum organizations in the city of Edmonton this week. The City of Edmonton, through the Edmonton Arts Council introduced the new Arts and Museum Building Operating Grant this year to assist not-for-profit organizations with the rising costs of maintaining their facilities.

“This program will help to ensure that arts and museum organizations in Edmonton can afford to maintain clean, safe, comfortable and secure facilities that remain accessible by the public.” said Laurie Stalker, Grants and Research Director for the Edmonton Arts Council. “An economy like ours can be challenging for the not-for-profit sector and maintaining a facility can be very expensive. This program will cushion the impact of the increased maintenance costs on the facilities, user groups and community.”

The Arts and Museum Building Operating Grant will provide a sustainable funding mechanism to support not-for-profit arts and/or cultural organizations that own or have long-term leases on concert halls, live theatres, galleries and museums. The Arts and Museum Building Operating Grant program is not intended for capital expenditures, for endowment purposes, to support normal season or operations, or to fund administration costs. Additionally, the grants are not intended to support organizations that are primarily training or educational institutions.

For more information about this program, please contact Laurie Stalker, Grants and Research Director at (780) 424-2787 or visit the Grants section of our website at http://edmontonarts.ab.ca/grants.html.

Name or Organization: Understanding Cultural Issues: The Canadian Conference of the Arts Launches
The ABCs of Cultural Policy Series
Location: Online

Details:

OTTAWA, June 10, 2008 – The Canadian Conference of the Arts today begins publishing The ABCs of Cultural Policy, a new series of documents providing basic information to help understand Canadian cultural policy, along with many useful links. These documents will be freely available on the CCA website, under the heading The ABCs of Cultural Policy, at the following address: http://ccarts.ca/en/advocacy/publications/

The CCA has developed this tool in response to the repeated requests it receives from its members for information on various topics relating to cultural policy. While these topics are dealt with regularly in our bulletins, there was a need to bring together all material concerning a given topic in one document, so as to provide a readily accessible and timely reference source.

The first of The ABCs of Cultural Policy, posted today, deals with copyright, an issue being discussed by the cultural sector in light of the government’s promise to reform the copyright law. In these discussions, many terms, such as economic rights, moral rights, and fair use are employed. These terms reflect precise legal concepts, as well as the international context influencing Canadian lawmakers. The concepts included in the The ABCs of Cultural Policy document will allow you to follow developments in these areas and to better understand their impact on the rights of artists and consumers of cultural products.

This first The ABCs of Cultural Policy will soon be followed by a second, which will feature key information concerning fiscal measures affecting artists, cultural workers and arts organizations. This material will be particularly useful in understanding measures relating to arts and culture in federal budgets. A third The ABCs of Cultural Policy will focus on the issue of the status of the artist, a topic of continuous discussion within the cultural sector in Canada.

These first three instalments are just the beginning of a series the CCA intends to develop in the years to come. This series is designed to be a permanent reference tool that will be revised periodically to ensure that the information it contains remains up to date. You will therefore always have access to a reliable source of information when trying to understand cultural policy issues.

Online Course - Critical Thinking for Cultural Managers

Organization: Cultural Human Resource Council
Date: Ongoing
Details: The Cultural Human Resources Council CHRC is proud to announce the release of a unique online course: Critical Thinking for Cultural Managers learning module.

In association with the Council of Ontario Universities, Learning Advanced Essential Skills Online (LAESO) initiative, this interactive module builds on the conceptual framework of the CHRC's Competency Profile to further clarify the roles critical thinking plays in cultural management.

Funded by the Government of Canada's Sector Council Program and developed by emerging Cultural Managers this material is designed allow practicing Cultural Managers to engage with various aspects of "critical thinking" as it pertains to their everyday work.

These aspects include generating innovative directions for one’s organization; finding commonalities across divergent groups and interests; and responding to, and productively negotiating conflict and contingency as they arise. Content for this module, comprising 2 to 3 hours of engagement, will consist of various definitions of "critical thinking", in accessible and relevant language; short self-assessment exercises; and a series of interactive case stories depicting everyday problems or issues in which Cultural Managers must put their critical thinking skills into play.

Major topics discussed throughout this module include Creating a "Big Plan", developing a Network, Administrating the "Big Plan, and Generating Change. "Interactive scenarios" allow for the opportunity to take on the role of a new Project Manager having to put critical thinking skills in play in articulating a vision and strategy to other key members of your organization.

Susan Annis, Executive Director of the Cultural Human Resources Council notes: "This course is designed to sharpen critical thinking skills for Cultural Managers. Developed with the advice and direction of practicing Cultural Managers, it is lively and practical, reflecting their day-to-day realities. We hope it will resonate with Managers across the sector."

This online module is available on CHRC's web site www.culturalhrc.ca.

Tools for Performing Arts Presenters

Organization: CHRC
Date: Ongoing

Details:

The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) continues to expand its suite of tools and resources for workers in the cultural sector with the release of a Competency Chart and Profile for Presenters.

Funded by the Government of Canada's Sector Council Program, and building on the extensive work it has carried out in the area of cultural management over the past three years, CHRC has developed this chart and profile in close collaboration with the FCCF (Fédération culturelle des Canadiens français), RIDEAU (Réseau indépendant des diffuseurs d'événements artistiques unis), and CAPACOA (Canadian Arts Presenting Association /Association canadienne des organismes artistiques).

Presenters were taken to include such titles as artistic director, cultural and artistic program coordinator, cultural program supervisor, general manager / director / general director, theatre manager, venue manager, cultural centre manager, director of programming, chief entertainment officer, buyer or purchaser, impresario (considered an "old-fashioned" term), programmer (used more in Europe than in North America), and promoter (most often used when the person performing the role is not attached to a specific venue).

These valuable tools will assist Performing Arts Presenters and those with an interest in the field to evaluate their own skills and determine whether additional training is required. This material can also be applied in developing competency development programs, negotiating and customizing training programs, developing/reviewing career planning programs, creating recruitment profiles, and writing individual position descriptions.

The chart and profile can be found on the CHRC website www.culturalhrc.ca.

CHRC has also conducted an extensive Training Gaps Analysis (TGA) based on the skills identified in the chart. Recommendations from the TGA include:
• Increase awareness and understanding of the presenter's role in the performing arts industry
• Facilitate access to professional development and networking opportunities.
• Develop more formalized training programs at the post-secondary level.
• Encourage mentorship and internship programs.
• Recognize the importance of networking to presenters.

The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) strives to be at the centre of vision and forward thinking in the area of cultural human resources development. CHRC brings together representatives of arts disciplines and cultural industries in the cultural sector to address the training and career development needs of cultural workers - artists, creators, technical staff, managers and all others engaged professionally in the sector, including the self-employed.
