Education

A University/ College degree in the arts is preferred. Previous experience as a theatrical producer
would be considered an asset.

Creative Development

Our Artistic Director will be responsible for the ongoing development of new work for young audiences
including script development and commissioning, local, national artistic and touring collaborations and
the mentoring of emerging and diverse artists, technicians and audiences.

Business Acumen

Our Artistic Director will be comfortable working in a not-for-profit arts organization He/ She will
understand the process of strategic planning and the necessity for fiscal responsibility and effective
board governance. He/ She will respect the structure of a partnership-based senior management team
that includes the General Manager and Artistic Director working in collaboration and answering equally
to the Board of Directors. He/ She will be expected to assist with fundraising initiatives.

• Strategic short and long term artistic planning
• The selection of our annual season of touring plays
• Development and artistic oversight of our Artists in School Residency program
• Selection of our creative, stage management, production and intern teams.
• Commission and develop new plays for Theatre for Young Audiences

About Quest Theatre

Quest Theatre began as a partnership between Duval Lang and Rick McNair in the summer of 1984.
Since that time, the company has produced 86 touring productions and performed to over 1.1 million
young people and adults. Since 1992, when we began our Artists in School Residency program, the
company has conducted almost 300 residencies. In addition, Quest Theatre operates a Theatre School,
Summer Drama Camps and an Annual Youth Art Show. The company supports emerging artists and
playwrights and regularly commissions and develops new plays.

We have been recognized by our national peers as one of the most dynamic Theatre for Young
Audience companies in Canada, for both our artistic and administrative endeavors. We have been
nominated for and have received several Betty Mitchell Awards since 2000.

The company has a strong commitment to fiscal responsibility. It has posted deficit-free, balanced
budgets since 1993. In 2004, and again in 2006, we received an Encore! Award from the Alberta
Performing Arts Stabilization Fund for Outstanding Sustainable Business Practices supporting artistic
excellence.

Quest Theatre’s structure is that of a governing board of directors and a dual headed organization
consisting of the General Manager (GM) and the Artistic Director (AD). The GM and AD work in
collaboration and both report to the board of directors.

The company employs 3 full-time staff, with contract support as required and provides work for over
150 artists annually. The annual budget varies based on programming years. The current operating
budget is $840,000. Anticipated start date is early March of 2009.

The Box Office Coordinator's duties and responsibilities include:

1. Reception
- Receive and direct visitors by phone and in person (customer

- Receive deliveries, invoices and mail and direct them to the

- Maintain, clean and organize front desk/box office area and lobby

- Open the front/main doors at the start of the business day

2. Box Office

- Be accountable for the box office float and the balancing of

- Prepare and mail out ticket orders, including season tickets

- Process donations, tax receipts, and memberships

- Distribute Revenue reports weekly

- Ensure the office is equipped with appropriate supplies at all

Position Function

time, money, people, equipment and space to meet production/facility/client

Applicants are invited for a full-time tenure track appointment at the Assistant Professor (entry level), in theatre history and theory, and performance studies. We seek a specialist in one or more of the following: Aboriginal/First Nations, African, Asian, South Asian, South/Latin American Theatre.

The position will engage primarily with the Department's BA, BA Honours, MA and MFA programs. The BA and BA Honours programs emphasize a liberal arts education through the interplay of theatre practice and critical theory. The MA places emphases on theatre theory, performance studies and production and new play dramaturgy. Teaching and/or practice in related areas, such as play analysis, playwriting or contemporary Canadian theatre topics, will be an asset, as will experience or interest in teaching writing intensive or writing across the curriculum courses.

The successful candidate will have

A PhD degree in theatre/performance studies (or be near completion)
University-level teaching experience
A record of publication
Evidence of a coherent program of research
An understanding of the interaction of theory and performance and capacity to engage Department students and faculty in a dynamic exchange between theatrical research and practice
The Department of Drama offers liberal arts programs leading to BA, BA Honours and MA degrees and conservatory programs leading to BFA degrees in Acting, Design, and Technical Theatre and MFA degrees in Directing, Design, and Theatre Voice Pedagogy. Faculty may also participate in interdisciplinary PhD supervision and in the development of a PhD program in theatre. Graduates from all programs have identifiable records of achievement on a national and international scale. There will be opportunities for interaction with all areas of the Department, including guest artists and researchers and the department's Lee Playwright-In-Residence.

Faculty are also required to engage in research and/or creative activity of quality, and to assume appropriate administrative and leadership responsibilities. Excellent funding opportunities are available for investigation/experimentation/research in the successful candidate's areas of expertise.

Facilities

The Fine Arts Building, with four performance spaces for Drama, was designed specifically for the teaching of theatre arts, music and visual arts. The adjacent Timms Centre for the Arts, a separate and highly acclaimed theatre complex which opened in March 1995, contains a flexible "black box" playing space, a 300 seat proscenium stage, graduate office area, green room, dressing rooms, and scene, properties and costume workshops. The university library has the second largest collection in Canada, with strong collections in Canadian Theatre, and Quebec theatre in translation. Periodical holdings and data bases on comparative theatre are among the most complete in the country. Further, the city of Edmonton is well known for its collegial and thriving theatre community; there are more theatres/capita than in any other Canadian city.

The appointment is effective July 1, 2009 and will be at the entry-level Assistant Professor level. University of Alberta salaries are competitive and there is an excellent benefits package.

Currently celebrating its 45th season, and with over 200 staff, the Arts Club operates and programs the 450-seat Granville Island Stage and the 650-seat Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage and also operates one of Vancouver’s premiere live music venues, the Backstage Lounge.

The Arts Club seeks a talented, dynamic and energetic Director of Finance & Systems to join its talented senior management team. Reporting to the Executive Director, the successful candidate will provide financial guidance to the organization, including accounting and IT oversight, strategic planning, budgeting, financial reporting, and analysis.

The position is located on located on Granville Island in Vancouver, BC.

The ideal candidate has:

A CA/CGA/CMA designation and a minimum of five years in public accounting or related experience
A strong background in general accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting
Knowledge of the not-for-profit sector and not-for-profit accounting principles
A background in systems including maintaining a network system and an understanding of ticketing systems would be an asset
Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic senior management team
An appreciation and understanding of an environment comprised of diversely talented creative and administrative professionals
Experience working with volunteer boards of directors and related sub-committees
The ability to manage and direct a department comprised of an IT Manager, accountant, Manager of Database & Systems, and a clerical assistant
A genuine interest in the arts and in particular live theatre

Job Duties

Financial Analysis and assistance with strategic planning
Preparation of operating budgets and analysis for season and single ticket pricing
Preparation of consolidated and non-consolidated monthly financial statements
Presentation of monthly financial results and forecasts to Board of Directors, and sub-committees of board for their review and approval
Attends board and finance committee meetings
In conjunction with the Executive Director serves as the financial officer for the Arts Club of Vancouver Theatre Foundation
Preparation and monitoring of rolling twelve month cash flows
Oversight of year-end and monthly financial reports and review of closing entries
Preparation and review of working papers for external auditors
As part of senior management team providing input on a variety of grant applications including reporting to funders of multi-year grants
Works with external consultants to maintain our network and workstations
