To our Members:

Notes for November

Those of you who know me personally know that I like to use metaphor when encapsulating the work we do at Theatre Alberta. If I imagine all the people and organizations that create, produce, and teach theatre across the province as links in a chain, then Theatre Alberta is the blacksmith who forges that chain and ensures its strength.

When we present events like PlayWorks Ink 2011, we get to see this metaphor come to life. Artists, educators, students, and other theatre-makers converge in space and time to examine together all of the beautiful elements of what we do. New connections are made, new links are joined together.

At Theatre Alberta we are primarily concerned with the wider provincial theatre community but, at the same time, Canada is a small country. We are connected to communities, large and small, from west to east and north to south. Our community connects to those outside our provincial borders whenever we invite artists, such as Daniel MacIvor, to come and teach and share personal perspectives with us. We are enlightened, but so too is he, we hope, and he will share his experience of our community with others.

And, we export our unique perspectives as much as we import. Catalyst Theatre is a great example of that, and I look forward to seeing our homegrown talent converging with that from abroad both in the workshop spaces and over pints at the Auburn this weekend.

Our Alberta theatre chain connects high school drama teachers to sound designers in community theatres, professional directors to post secondary theatre students; it allows for budding playwrights, seasoned technicians, ensemble creators, and our audiences and patrons to be a part of something mighty.

At Theatre Alberta, we are ultimately concerned with connectivity and the strength of the creative chain. We believe that we are stronger together, and because of each other.

See you November 3 - 6 in Calgary!

Keri Mitchell (née Ekberg)
Executive Director

"Really the only two things we need to make theatre (beyond an idea) are silence and darkness."

~ Daniel MacIvor (lifted from his blog at danielmacivor.com)

PLAYWORKS INK 2011 HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND!!!

PlayWorks_Ink_2011

After a one year hiatus, PlayWorks Ink returns to Calgary's EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts this weekend (Nov. 3 - 6, 2011). We are eagerly anticipating a brilliant slate of theatre workshops, play readings, discussions, and socials. Our bags are packed and the cars are all gassed up. We only have one last question... Will we see you there?

Yes, there is still room available. (But not much.) We have a limited amount of space in our acting stream of workshops: If Words Be Made of Breath with Jane MacFarlane, Working from Within: An Intuitive Approach to the Acting Process with Joe-Norman Shaw, and From the Ground Up with Anita Miotti. Playwrights don't fear, we also have a few spots left for Alberta Playwrights' Network Executive Director Trevor Rueger's session Take a Playwright to Work(Shop). You can register in advance here, or come down and see us on-site - we'll also be registering last-minuters at the door!

We are also extremely excited and proud to present PlayWorks Ink 2011 Special Guest Daniel MacIvor's keynote address, The Artificial Authentic (Nov. 5th at 8 PM, John Dutton Theatre in the Central Public Library). Don't miss one of Canada's most renowned performer-playwrights discuss the challenges of truth-telling in the theatre. Tickets: $20 at the door.

...Or you could purchase a special events pass for access to all the conference readings and events over the weekend. For only $50, you can attend Daniel's keynote address as well as:

  • Showcase readings of this year's Alberta Playwriting Contest winners (Super 8 by Mark C. Hopkins and Charles Netto, and Sequence by Arun Lakra);
  • The showcase reading of The Art of Homecoming by Betty Ternier Daniels (courtesy Saskatchewan Playwrights Centre);
  • A play reading and talkback featuring Elyne Quan (President of the Playwrights Guild of Canada);
  • A panel discussion on the unique aspects of Alberta theatre (featuring Daniel MacIvor, Blake Brooker and Mieko Ouchi, moderated by David van Belle); and
  • A luncheon along with Theatre Alberta's Annual General Meeting (AGM).

  • Let’s make this a weekend for showing our roots, celebrating them, and cultivating new ones. See you there!

    Audiences in the Greater Edmonton Area also have an opportunity to enjoy an intimate evening with Daniel MacIvor immediately following PlayWorks Ink. On Monday, November 7th at 8 PM, the Arden Theatre On Stage Series, in partnership with Theatre Alberta and the Alberta Playwrights' Network, presents the première reading of I, Animal, a new trilogy of monologues questioning what it means to be human. The performance will feature a pre-show wine tasting event at 7 PM and an exclusive Q & A with Daniel on-stage following the reading!

    Daniel_MacIvor

    A reminder for all Theatre Alberta members: you are invited (and encouraged) to attend our 2010-2011 AGM on November 6th at 1 PM, in the Engineered Air Theatre, EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts (205 8 Avenue SE, Calgary).

    Our AGM is an excellent opportunity to join and meet your fellow TA members, board of directors, and staff, as well as receive the annual report, elect new board members, and conduct other important society business … oh yes, and we provide you with a free lunch!

    The AGM will be followed by the closing PlayWorks Ink event – a reading of Sequence by Arun Lakra, winner of the Alberta Playwriting Competition’s 2011 Grand Prize.

    Please email Stephanie to RSVP - so we can book your lunch - at theatreab@theatrealberta.com. For more information, click here.

    Theatre Alberta is proud to announce the creation of a new scholarship: The Michelle Dias Community Service Award.

    Michelle Dias was a well-loved member of the Alberta theatre community and was instrumental in the creation of Safe Stages, a vital resource for health and safety best practices in the theatre. Michelle passed away unexpectedly on September 6, 2011, in Edmonton.

    In recognition of Michelle's contributions to Theatre Alberta and the wider provincial theatre community, we have created a scholarship for our Dramaworks program in her name.

    If you wish to donate to the scholarship fund, Theatre Alberta can provide a tax receipt for donations of $20 and greater. Please ensure to mark your donation with Michelle Dias Community Service Award so that we can properly recognize it.
