WHAT THEATRE ALBERTA WISHES FOR ITS 30TH BIRTHDAY...

Theatre Alberta turned 30 years old on January 30, and we feel great about it! In this special year, we are also celebrating our first year of operations as a registered charity, and we need your help! In order to be eligible for the Government of Alberta’s Community Spirit Donation Grant Program, we need to raise a few hundred more dollars before March 31, our fiscal year end. Naturally, raising more than what we need to qualify would be great too! Your donation to Theatre Alberta supports all of our programs and services; visit our website to see how your contribution helps. There's a lot to celebrate and a lot to be thankful for — please show your support for Theatre Alberta by making a donation. Charitable Tax Receipts will be issued for all donations of $20 or more. There are several easy ways to donate: Online or over the phone with your credit card. Mail us a cheque. Visit us at the office.
Our thanks to everyone who has given this year! See our Supporters here.

ARTSTREK REGISTRAR

Each year at Theatre Alberta, one die-hard theatre devotee spends their summer processing applications for Artstrek, Theatre Alberta’s residential summer theatre program for teens. The ideal candidate for this position has first-hand experience with the Artstrek program, the ability to work under pressure, is familiar with Mac computers, shows attention to detail, and possesses a high degree of accuracy in all their work with a fondness for data entry. Applicants must be available to work onsite at Artstrek (Red Deer College) from July 6 to July 10 inclusive. The remainder of the employment period will take place at Theatre Alberta's office in Edmonton.

PROGRAMS ASSISTANT

Theatre Alberta's office is abuzz during the summer months as we plan and deliver Artstrek, create our annual Playbill poster and Fall issue of All Stages, get ready for PlayWorks Ink, and generally prepare for the start of the next theatre season. We are seeking a Programs Assistant to work in tandem with all Theatre Alberta staff members to increase administrative support during these busy months. Duties will include general office administration and assisting on many Theatre Alberta programs and services. The ideal candidate for this position is enthusiastic about theatre, enjoys dealing with people, and is able to work independently and as a team player. Excellent computer skills, especially database experience, will be considered assets.

Freedom to Read Week February 20 - 26, 2011

"Freedom to read can never be taken for granted. Even in Canada, a free country by world standards, books and magazines are banned at the border. Books are removed from the shelves in Canadian libraries, schools and bookstores every day. Free speech on the Internet is under attack. Few of these stories make headlines, but they affect the right of Canadians to decide for themselves what they choose to read."- from the Freedom to Read website

These are some of the books and magazines recently challenged in Alberta:
- Catholic Insight (Roman Catholic Journal)
- Wild Fire by Nelson DeMille
- Dolls and Bears to Make and Dress (part of Australian Women’s Weekly Craft Library series
- Gay Calgary and Edmonton (local news and entertainment magazine)
- Vue Weekly (local news and entertainment magazine)
- Western Standard magazine

Freedom to Read Week is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Freedom to Read Week is organized by the Freedom of Expression Committee of the Book and Periodical Council. Celebrate your Freedom to Read by reading a challenged book, attending a Freedom to Read Week event, or planning your own event in your community.

Donations

Thank you to East of 60 Productions for its donation to the library.

The library and office will be closed and the drop-box unavailable from February 19 - 21 for the Family Day long weekend. We will re-open February 22.
