WBR NOW ACCEPTING YOUR REQUESTS!

The 2011/2012 Workshops by Request season is open for business! After undergoing a program review, a few adjustments have been made. Please check out www.theatrealberta.com/workshops_by_request.htm for the updated information package and application. All community theatres in the province that are group members of Theatre Alberta can now submit an application to request a theatre professional come to your community and teach on any topic you propose— technical or artistic. The season starts in September, so send in your applications now! If you have questions about your group membership status or about the program, contact Stephanie at theatreab@theatrealberta.com.

 

EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR PROGRAMMER AT THEATRE ALBERTA

Theatre Alberta is seeking a motivated and creative Programmer who will be responsible for leading the organization's educational and artistic programs and services. Applicants will be knowledgeable and passionate about theatre and learning, with a post-secondary degree or diploma (major or minor) in theatre/drama. You enjoy working with people, are self-motivated, and highly curious. Varied knowledge of the provincial theatre community with experience in professional, community, and educational theatre will be considered an asset. This is a full-time position with benefits, located in Edmonton. Position to commence late September/early October 2011.

THEATRE ALBERTA WELCOMES DAWN IUS TO THE FAMILY

Dawn joins the Theatre Alberta team as the Fund Development Coordinator. Her past work experience includes marketing, communications, public relations and fundraising for large and small not-for-profit organizations, including the Young Alberta Book Society. She is an avid reader and a multi-genre writer, with a healthy affection for all things thriller. When not writing, Dawn can be found hanging out at creepy crossroads with her family and three bull mastiff hounds. You know, just skulking around.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR ARTSTREK

It's a wrap!  August means that Artstrek is over for another year, and what a year it's been!  304 students from around the province shared in the exploration of the comedy classic You Can't Take It With You at Red Deer College—check out this YouTube clip for a taste of what these talented teens did at Artstrek! BURNT THICKET THEATRE PLANS SIX-MONTH NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

In 2012 Calgary's  burnt thicket theatre, in partnership with Raise Their Voice, will present a six-month North American tour of Andrew Kooman's She Has a Name.  The tour of She Has a Name—which has already met with critical and audience acclaim—hopes to engage thousands of people in this compelling story of human trafficking. The groups are actively fundraising for this project. More>

PLAYWRIGHTS GUILD OF CANADA HONOURS EDMONTON FESTIVAL

The Edmonton International Fringe Festival has received Honorary Membership status from Playwrights Guild of Canada for its contribution to Canadian Theatre—this is the first time an organization has been chosen to receive PGC's Honorary Membership.  The official presentation will take place as part of the festival's closing ceremonies on August 21.  More>

The Alberta Drama Festival Association will be holding its next casino in Calgary at the  Cash Casino on Thursday, Nov 3 and Friday, Nov 4. If you would like to volunteer or would like more information please contact Cliff Cameron at cliff@noremac.ca.

The ADFA is working on revamping its website—stay tuned for more information available soon at http://adfa.ca/.

The ADFA is also in the process of compiling a database of community and post-secondary theatre groups across the province. Please send your contact information to Dawn at dawnfaeries@hotmail.com if you would like to register your community theatre group and be part of the ADFA information mailout regarding the ADFA Zone Festivals.

The ADFA's next board meeting will be Sept 24 in Red Deer.  More information will be provided in the September issue of The Buzz.

Retired performer and former University of Alberta dialect coach Jeremy Dix-Hart passed away on July 12, 2011 in Cape Town, South Africa. More>

CREATIVE AIRDRIE SEEKS PERFORMERS FOR ALBERTA ARTS DAYS

Airdrie
Airdrie is one of five featured celebration sites for Alberta Arts Days Sept 30 - Oct 2 and they'd love to host any performing group that wants to get in extra stage time. Several indoor/outdoor venues are available at no charge. All admission must be free but "passing the hat" is permitted. They are also looking for solo performers for busking around the city including, yes—transit buses as BUSkers! Creative Airdrie will do extensive advertising and promotion for all who partake. Please e-mail info@creativeairdrie.ca with details about your show and stage requirements.

You can play a role in Canada's most prestigious performing arts awards! Your nomination could determine who receives a Governor General's Performing Arts Award in 2012, the 20th Anniversary of the Awards. The process is simple and you can do it online. KALEIDO FAMILY ARTS FESTIVAL  - Edmonton

The Kaleido Festival runs September 9-11 and this year's festival is more exciting than ever, with a dynamic mix of local and international talent. As a volunteer, you get to meet the artists, make friends, attend parties and, of course, enjoy great art—all on 118th Ave! And don't forget the festival's famous T-Shirt making event—for volunteers only.
