Introducing Dramaworks 2009
“The important thing is not to stop questioning ... Never lose a holy curiosity.”
–Albert Einstein
Curiosity — an emotion that causes natural inquisitive behaviour such as exploration, investigation, and learning. It is the fuel of arts and science and is common to human beings from infancy to old age. A heightened sense of curiosity forms deeper questions: it makes one open to potential, receptive to new ideas, and fearless to explore how things could be different. At a time of instability the best thing we can do is foster and encourage the development of curiosity.
Dramaworks 2009 is harnessing the power of curiosity by creating a wonderland of workshops to choose from: bringing sets alive with colour, facilitating group creation, discovering character through the body and through make-up design, pillaging the depths of material that usually requires a warning at the door, releasing the freedom and excitement of Shakespeare, writing scripts that allow other artists to contribute their skills, and singing yourself into the hearts of an audience. Exceptional instructors bring the fundamentals of experimentation to this unique workshop environment, ensuring that participants of every level gain not only new skills but also new ideas and questions.
For the special feature this year, Theatre Alberta reaches across the ocean to Poland to bring one of the exciting and exploratory companies supported by the Grotowski Institute’s Promotional program to your doorstep. Combining physical training and performance with the power of some of the world's oldest polyphonic songs, the company, inspired by Grotowski’s philosophy of ensemble work, focuses on the long-term development of actors’ skills, and discovering new forms of expression by acting through song. The Teatr ZAR Intensive is a challenging exploration of their methods for those who have professional performance training and experience. Sitting on the outskirts of what we are familiar with, this workshop promises to be a profoundly altering experience.
In response to your requests for longer workshops, this year you can choose from 6 Intensives! As always, Theatre Alberta works to provide unparalleled theatrical development opportunities. Join us. Risk your preconceptions of theatre. After all, risk is what sets curiosity in motion and bravery is what gives risk power. Perhaps the key to sustainability is curiosity?
