Character Mask

Do you like to meet tremendously outrageous people? Better yet, do you like to create them? This workshop guarantees to unleash the many different characters that exist inside your fantastical whims by working with character masks. Be introduced to a variety of masks and learn their transformational power as an acting and improvisational tool. Be challenged and guided toward discovery and creation that begins from the outside appearance and enlightens the inner heartbeat of your character.

Theatre games are often thought of as goofy fun, but can provide a strong foundation to any unit of work. Come learn games designed to enhance narrative skills, spontaneity, listening, and collaboration; link these exercises to the study of improvisation, physical theatre, creative movement, scene study, character development, choral speech, and devising. Leave with a treasure chest full of new games, skills, and lesson ideas. Everyone is welcome as long as they come prepared to play!

Hitting Your Mark

A study in acting that will compare stage versus camera craft for all levels. This practical exploration will give participants the experience of the actor’s responsibilities and techniques when preparing, auditioning, and performing for television and movies. Through on-your-feet scene study, create an on-set environment to learn the essential knowledge needed for the art and industry of film. Prerequisites: a willingness to try, say yes, and a love for working with others.

Do you love making weird noises? Discover the creative potential of sound from dogs barking to spaceships landing with sound designer and composer Dave Clarke. This practical workshop will introduce you to the basics of theatre sound: the set-up and operation of speakers, mixers and microphones, recording sound effects, cue preparation using digital editing software and effects processing, and the nuts-and-bolts of organizing your design for playback. Learn how to assemble a soundscape and make artistic choices which support and enhance your production.

A Playwright Prepares: Workshopping Your Script

There it is, staring at you from the shelf, waiting for you to return; that script you’ve worked and reworked. It’s as tight as you can make it but there’s more to be done. You need a fresh perspective, new problemsolving ideas. It’s time for a workshop. How does a playwright create a workshop opportunity and prepare to make it as useful as possible? Work with award-winning new work director Ron Jenkins as he guides you through the process of workshop preparation. Professional performers will join you to read scenes and offer a glimpse of your characters. Gain tools to help you clarify your questions, streamline your story, and extract the right information for the next phase of your play’s development.
*Participants will be asked to bring a scene from a work-in-progress.

Get Your Scene On

If you’ve ever wondered what professionals do to discover a play through practical scene work then this workshop is for you. A participatory exploration for actors and directors to “get their scene on” and learn more about the fundamentals of acting and directing through scene study. Join the creative team of actor Caroline Livingstone and director Bradley Moss in a laboratory course focusing on the art of cracking a scene and rediscovering the playwright’s intention through script analysis. Collaborate in a positive environment and walk away with practical exercises and techniques on script analysis and interpretation.
