The new EAC MicroGrant… because sometimes timing is everything. We know that Edmonton’s artists find and make opportunities to engage in valuable projects all the time. We also know inspiration has an energy of its own, and doesn’t always wait around for the next grant deadline. And sometimes, that spark may be only one small investment away from reality. The MicroGrant gives the EAC a new way to invest in the success of Edmonton arts and artists. With no set deadlines for applications and amounts up to $1,000 available, the MicroGrant enables you to respond to opportunities quickly, and to give life to projects that are just a boost away from take-off. (Please note that this is a pilot program that will be reviewed regularly and may change without notice.) |

| Name or Organization: | AFA Grant Program Restructuring |
| Location: | Alberta wide |
|
Details: |
In an effort to ensure AFA programming continues to meet the needs of the province’s Arts communities, in 2006 the AFA undertook a three-year evaluation of its programming structure. Feedback from over 2000 stakeholders representing Alberta’s artists and arts organizations was received and helped to inform the AFA about programming successes, opportunities and challenges to stakeholders. Feedback gathered through the evaluation has led to the formation of a new structure for grant programming designed to streamline the application process and increase the efficiency of program administration. April 2, 2010 will see the launch of four umbrella grant programs. Arts Organizations – Operating This new structure will provide a number of grant options, called streams, under each of these umbrella grant programs. These programs are tailored to meet the needs of the arts community but will not change existing application deadlines or directly affect program funding. New grant application forms are under development to reflect these changes. These application forms are scheduled to be made available on the AFA website on April 2, 2010, and are to be used for any applications made after that date. The current application forms are to be used when applying for funding on any programs with an April 1, 2010 deadline. Work will continue to minimize the number of streams in the four program areas. This work is intended to further simplify the application process and create programs that are more transparent and accessible without impacting the eligibility of applicants. These changes will not impact existing grant commitments; nor will they exclude any individual artist or arts organizations from applying for funding. |

TIX on the Square is growing! In early 2011, Tix took over responsibility for managing the former City Store on Churchill Square. The store has morphed into a showcase of local indie talent, carrying several lines of original jewelry, hand-made stuffed animals, silk scarves, fiber art, photography, raku, pottery, as well as City of Edmonton Archives prints, and two lines of silk-screened t-shirts and tote bags. “The new store is a perfect fit with our existing mandate of supporting the Edmonton Arts community,” says Judy Stelck, who has been at the helm of TIX on the Square for over 12 years. “Now we can support the visual arts in addition to ticketing, promoting local events, and selling CDs and books.” Catching some of our great festivals downtown during the summer? Come see what’s in store. You’ll find TIX on the southwest corner of the square. Extended hours in June, July and August: Thursday and Fridays until 7pm; Saturdays until 5pm; and now open Sundays from noon to 5pm. | Name or Organization: | Ken Cameron/Brave Communications – Board Retreats and Strategic Review |
| Location: | Alberta wide |
|
Details: |
I recently had the great pleasure of leading a board retreat for Catalyst Theatre from Edmonton, an organization lead by a pair of colleagues I greatly respect. I was able to use a lot of directing and playwriting techniques to explore the serious issues we had in front of us. Consequently the board had a lot of fun and is prepared to move forward as a unified group. And most importantly, the theatre’s staff feel respected, understood and supported. As a result of this fantastic experience I am hanging out my shingle and seeking more opportunities to bring this model of “serious play retreats” to non-profit boards and to help colleagues. I’ve been through a lot of board retreats and facilitated meetings as a participant. I’ve observed works best for me is applying creative, playful imagination to serious subject matters. Some corners of the facilitation world call this modality “serious play”: as artists it’s the way we think naturally, but for some of our business-minded board members it’s the kind of entirely new way of thinking that brought them to our boards in the first place. One of my great pleasures at the Magnetic North Theatre Festival (and prior to that at Alberta Playwrights’ Network) was to help people fulfill their potential. In helping my colleagues realize their vision and communicate it to their board(s), I have come to understand that this work is a natural extension of what I’ve done all my career. Really, its like a new play workshop. I like to think I’m dramaturging your board. If you are thinking about a Board Retreat or Strategic Review – or know someone who is – please get in touch with me or pass my info along. |

We think this is wrong – there are too many good plays that are never given a chance. So we’ve decided to do something about it … We’re now offering you the opportunity to include your play in the world’s largest play database, listing it next to the likes of Neil Simon and Sam Shepard and selling it as an ePlay Download. The deal is pretty simple – we’re charging an admin fee to cover the cost of entering your play into our database. But when you sell 5 copies – we’ll refund the fee. Future sales will then be split 50/50 between us. And every week, we’ll be featuring one of the new ePlays in our ezine – so a synopsis of your play could land in the inbox of 35,000 theatre fans across the world. For too long, too few playwrights have had a platform to promote their art. We’re trying to change that. So give your play a chance – enter it into the world’s largest play database. Best wishes, Jane Gardener |

If you could eliminate the extra costs added onto your theatre ticket by a separate “E” ticketing company similar to the one we’ve been reading about in the papers of late, improve upon your patron’s online ticket purchasing experience and take a new fresh approach to selling your own ticket, would you? If the answer is yes, you need to view our White Label Box Office Solutions (WLBOS) ticket buying demo. Our demo will only take a moment to load to your computer. WLBOS is officially licensed to market the Seat Advisor Box Office Solution (SABO) software. Our ticketing software has been in development and in use since 1998 and has ticketed millions of event patrons in the US, Australia, Europe, the Caribbean and is now in Canada. Using our software, there’s no need for your patron to pay those extra ticket fees that end up being added onto your theatre ticket for a separate “E” ticketing system company. Your patron can spend this extra money at your event supporting your sponsors, buying your merchandise and improving your bottom line. You, as an event holder and now ticket seller, already have your own brand and your own patrons. WLBOS aims to support your brand and online E ticket sales without advertising ourselves at all. Your event remains YOUR event. Our ticketing support is entirely behind the scenes. We enable you to become your own ticket seller by interfacing our software with your web site. If you choose, you can also act as a ticket seller for other organizations, such as another theatre group or local charity. There are a host of options that are available to you with our software. We can tailor your site to suit any venue and function. |

|
Details: |
Information for CADAC Users Two years ago, we launched CADAC (Canadian Arts Data/Données sur les Arts au Canada) and today we have more than 1,500 registered organizations who have submitted over 7,500 financial and statistical forms, including historical data and projections. And while we have been successful in the implementation, we continue to find ways to improve our processes, based on your feedback. New Template Today, we are announcing a CADAC Accounting Template to ease the process of financial audits and the completion of CADAC financial forms. The template is recommended for small to mid-size organizations and although we strongly encourage you to use it, it will be optional for future financial audits. The template will serve as a toolkit and reference for auditors and arts organizations alike, allowing them to follow a predetermined chart of accounts. The chart is produced based on the structure of more than 60 models from various arts organizations. Auditors will be able to easily break down or group together specific financials, thus allowing an arts organization to better match its financial statements against each respective line item in the CADAC financial forms. This will also help the overall reconciliation process. On November 22, 2010, we will be sending out a survey to evaluate customer satisfaction and help CADAC improve its services. Your input will help us to fine-tune the way we collect, disseminate and analyze data pertaining to Canadian arts organizations. The survey is estimated to take fifteen minutes and CADAC encourages all organizations to participate. |
