Play: Angel's River
Company: Covenant Theatre
Location: Edmonton

Details:

Production will take place at Catalyst Theatre, May 12 – 22, 2011.

This is a co-op production and all actors will receive an equal share of profits.

Auditions Dates: September 23 & 24. Scenes to be read will be available in advance.

Angel’s River tells the story of a teenager’s difficult decision after giving birth to a baby girl. The play moves fluidly through time and place, from the August heat in a hospital room to the banks of a river where the love story is revealed in reverse throughout the colder months of the year. Initiated by a mysterious ten-year whose identity is revealed throughout the play, her story is a search for answers about identity, heritage and love, and the personal mythology that helps us understand who we are and where we come from. Set in rural New Brunswick in 1969, the play is inspired by a true story. The universal themes in the play include generational poverty and violence, and the questions it asks about family, responsibility and how our past affects our behaviour makes it extraordinarily relevant to today’s society.

Roles needing to be filled:

Carrie Lynn, age 17. She is the feisty, teenaged mother in the middle of a crisis. The role requires a large emotional range.

Rob, age 18. The baby’s father. Charming, but with a tendency towards violence.

Please note that we are looking for actors with professional actor training. Only actors who have been selected for an audition will be contacted.

Cabaret is a musical with a book by Joe Masteroff, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The 1966 Broadway production became a hit and spawned a 1972 film as well as numerous subsequent productions. It is based on John Van Druten's 1951 play I Am a Camera, which in turn was adapted from the novel Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, it focuses on nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. A sub-plot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub which serves as a constant metaphor for the tenuous and threatening state of late Weimar Germany throughout the show.

Characters:
CLIFFORD BRADSHAW - An American novelist
FRAULINE SCHNEIDER - A landlady who rents rooms in her large flat
HERR SCHULZ - One of Frl. Schneider's roomers and the proprietor of a Fruit Shop
FRAULINE KOST - Another of Frl. Schneider's roomers. She earns her living by offering favors to sailors
ERNST LUDWIG - A friendly and likable German
