What is Artstrek?

Artstrek is a residential summer theatre program for teens that has been running in the province of Alberta for 50 years! The program focuses on exploring the components of theatre and theatre production rather than getting a show on stage. Over the course of the week Artstrek students will explore acting, voice, directing, movement, sound/music, design, creation, and integration.

Artstrek is not a talent-based program; we are seeking students who are enthusiastic about theatre and who will be focused on the fun of learning and exploring with their instructors and other Artstrek participants.

Theatre Alberta selects a different play of study each year and contracts a new team of theatre professionals to develop a curriculum centred on that script. This means the program is always fresh, current, and evolving.

For Artstrek 2009 we are thrilled to offer teens the opportunity to explore Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s magical world of Into the Woods. Featuring unforgettable music and a wickedly witty plot, classic fairy tale characters collide with one another in this Tony Award-winning musical that turns the promise of “happily ever after” inside out. A world fraught with adventure and mystery, where misfortune and chance surprises abound, Into the Woods is a journey you won’t want to miss!

Into the Woods

“Let your hesitations be hushed.
Any moment, big or small, is a moment, after all.”

Sondheim’s spell-binding musical Into the Woods intertwines the adventures of a medley of fairy tale characters — including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, a pair of Prince Charmings, and Jack — with the story of a baker and his wife on a quest to lift a witch’s curse.

As each character sets off to chase dreams in the forest, their choices wreak havoc on everyone’s wishes — journeys become entangled in the most unexpected ways! Just when it seems they have conquered their misfortunes and are poised to live out their wildest dreams, disaster strikes again. Everyone accepts responsibility for his or her actions and comes to appreciate how much more there is to life than “happily ever after.”

Message from the Minister of Culture and Community Spirit

On behalf of the Government of Alberta, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2009 Artstrek program.

As Minister of arts and culture in Alberta, I am excited for the opportunity Artstrek provides our province’s young artists to sharpen their theatrical skills and make new friends. When our government launched its cultural policy in January 2008, we aimed to increase access to arts and encourage excellence — and Artstrek achieves both these goals. Theatre is a skilled discipline, offering a unique relationship between actor and audience. After all, it was Oscar Wilde who said, “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”

Thank you to Red Deer College for continuing to host Artstrek, and special thanks to Theatre Alberta and all the mentors, instructors, and professionals who have lent their time and skill to Alberta’s young theatre artists. Your continued dedication to theatre in Alberta is appreciated.

Best wishes for another successful program!

Lindsay Blackett
Minister of Culture and Community Spirit
