What is Artstrek?
Artstrek is a residential summer theatre program for teens that has been running in the province of Alberta for 49 years! The program focuses on exploring the components of theatre and theatre production rather than getting a show on stage. Over the course of the week Artstrek students will explore acting, voice, directing, movement, sound/music, design, creation, and integration.
Artstrek is not a talent-based program; we are seeking students who are enthusiastic about theatre and who will be focused on the fun of learning and exploring with their instructors and other Artstrek participants.
Theatre Alberta selects a different play of study each year and contracts a new team of theatre professionals to develop a curriculum centred on that script. This means the program is always fresh, current, and evolving.
For Artstrek 2008 we are proud and excited to offer Albertan teens the opportunity to delve into the double-edged world of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. A classic hit from the 1890s that offers a relevant, intelligent, and outrageous exploration of human morality today, The Importance of Being Earnest is an Artstrek adventure not to be missed!

Jill Connell, Programmer
“I never travel without my diary.
One should always have something sensational to read in the train.”

The Importance of Being Earnest is a comical story of two English bachelors, Jack and Algernon — one from the country who goes by the name of Ernest in the city and the other from the city who goes by the name of Ernest in the country. The plot thickens as we meet their love interests, Gwendolen and Cecily — two young ladies who are equally accustomed to inventing fictions in order to maintain the right appearances…
In this farcical high wire of witty repartee, double lives, mistaken identities, and misunderstandings between lovers, Oscar Wilde offers a deceptively irreverent social satire on Victorian morality. As twofaced dandies and damsels of the English upper-crust unravel the mystery of “Who is Ernest?”, Wilde invites us to delight in the hypocrisy of what it means to be “earnest.”

Message from the Minister of Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture
On behalf of the Government of Alberta, it is my pleasure to provide greetings for the 2008 Artstrek program.
Since 1959, Artstrek has taught, challenged, and celebrated Alberta’s young and eager theatre community. Aspiring thespians, set designers, and directors are sure to learn plenty from the talented and experienced team of theatre instructors. The Artstrek program fosters and encourages creativity, and greatly contributes to Alberta’s quality of
life — which is a priority for our government.
Special thanks must go to Theatre Alberta and the team of theatre instructors and working professionals who share their time with aspiring members of the theatre community. Your instruction is invaluable, and I thank you for your dedication to theatre arts in Alberta.
Here’s to another successful Artstrek program!
