The program, which takes place each summer on the campus of Red Deer College, is about the exploration of theatre and the components of theatre production rather than getting a show on stage. Over the course of a week, participants explore acting, voice, movement sound/music, and directing with some of Alberta's finest theatre professionals. Dive into the compelling world of theatre with Artstrek!

"I've been trying to — to figure it out
for along time, but it won't.
Everything has to figure out doesn't it?"

Join us to explore the Canadian classic Who Has Seen the Wind

Who Has Seen The Wind
By Lee MacDougall
based on the novel by W.O. Mitchell

Who Has Seen the Wind is a classic Canadian story about growing up on the prairies during the Great Depression. Set
in a small Saskatchewan town, the play follows the O’Connal family through recognizable yet revealing adventures: mishaps in the community, sickness and loss, the quest for a new pair of skates…

The Prairie wind is both fleeting and forever, weaving joy and sorrow throughout the community and inviting us to appreciate the magic and mystery of the world around us.

What is Artstrek?

What is ArtstrekArtstrek is a residential summer theatre program for teens that has been running in the province of Alberta for 48 years! The program focuses on exploring the components of theatre and theatre production rather than getting a show on stage. Over the course of the week Artstrek students will explore acting, voice, movement, sound/music, design, and directing.

Artstrek is not a talent-based program; we are seeking students who are enthusiastic about theatre and who will be focused on the fun of learning and exploring with their instructors and with other Artstrek participants.

Theatre Alberta selects a different play of study each year and contracts a new team of theatre professionals to develop a curriculum centered on that script. This means the program is always fresh, current and evolving.

A Day at Artstrek:
Classes run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. Class sizes are typically 20-24 students per instructor. Evening activities are coordinated by the Artstrek supervisors (past Artstrek participants 19-25 years of age). Our student/ supervisor ratio is approximately 12/1. Students stay in the four-bedroom suites attached to Red Deer College’s main building; each student has their own bedroom and a bathroom shared with three others. Meals are served in the cafeteria in an area designated for our students.

We are proud and excited to offer Albertan teens the opportunity to delve into the compelling world of Who Has Seen the Wind.

A Message from the Minister of Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture

For those who have a love for theatre, there is no better place to be than on the stage — directing the cast, acting in the spotlight, and designing sets and music to help tell the story.

At Artstrek, young theatre-lovers have the opportunity to develop their skills in all of these areas. From upstage to downstage, centre stage to the wings, participants will encounter all facets of the theatre, experiencing the life of a performance as it progresses from rehearsals to opening night. It is an atmosphere of creativity, fun and learning, and I look forward to seeing more of these rising stars on stages across Alberta as they continue to grow as artists and creators.

The success of Artstrek is due to the dedication of those behind the scenes. I would like to thank Theatre Alberta and the professional artists involved in the program for their efforts working with Alberta’s theatre community throughout the year. Together you are helping to build our next generation of artists, and the Alberta Government is proud to be a partner with you through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

Best wishes for this year’s Artstrek and for many more years of great theatre in Alberta.
