“Artstrek is my favourite place in the world.”

Artstrek 2007Location

RED DEER COLLEGE, Red Deer, in central Alberta on Queen Elizabeth II Highway (Highway 2).

Red Deer College is situated on the edge of Red Deer, an energetic city of 83,000 in the heart of central Alberta’s beautiful parkland. Red Deer is located midway between Edmonton and Calgary, just 90 minutes by car from either city. Bus travel is available through both Greyhound Lines and Red Arrow Lines. Access to Red Deer College is clearly marked from both directions on Queen Elizabeth II Highway (Highway 2).

The campus is a beautiful combination of rural setting and modern facilities. The college is surrounded by large, open lawn areas and is well removed from the city’s centre. You and your fellow participants will enjoy the comfortable residences and dine in the spacious cafeteria. A highly qualified administrative team supervises all residences and activities; their strong leadership qualities and experience will ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable Artstrek experience.

Red Deer College offers Artstrek the advantages of a stunning, state-of-the-art theatre facility for our exclusive use. Designed by the internationally acclaimed architect Arthur Erickson, the spectacular lobby, intimate stage area, functional production shops, and rehearsal studios work beautifully for Artstrek’s exploration of theatre.

Instructors

Artstrek Instructors are theatre educators and working professionals from around the province. They bring an extensive practical and academic base of knowledge to the program, connecting participants directly with the theatre scene in Alberta. Artstrek has been running for 48 years; some instructors are past Artstrek participants themselves!

Supervisors

Artstrek 2007Artstrek supervisors are selected from applicants who have previously attended Artstrek, have been away from the program for at least one year, and are 19 to 25 years of age. Many of them are students or recent graduates of post-secondary drama programs from around the province and can provide valuable insight to participants about their formal training. Our student/supervisor ratio is 12/1. Supervisors are responsible for students during out-of-class time and ensure that students get up in the morning and get to sleep at night. They supervise meal times, run the evening activities and conduct evening dorm meetings.

“I love Artstrek because it gives me the chance to be myself and meet new people.”
