If you’re planning to attend Artstrek this year, you may wish to consider applying for a community sponsorship or scholarship. This is not only a great way to offset Artstrek fees: obtaining a community sponsorship also looks great on an employment resume or post-secondary school application, and it demonstrates to us your commitment to attending this year’s Artstrek program.
It is our experience that many of the local organizations in communities will support young people in pursuit of further education; all you need to do is ask!
If you are interested in sourcing funding from within your community to attend Artstrek, Theatre Alberta has the information and resources to help. Here are some tips to get you started:
- We suggest you contact at least three organizations initially. (Click here for tips on the kind of organizations you may want to approach.)
- A good approach would be to begin with a phone call, to find out which organizations are interested in speaking with you further.
- Send an information package to those organizations. Your package should include information about who you are and the kinds of theatrical or artistic work you have done. Theatre Alberta will provide you with support material about Artstrek to help you create your package – email us and we’ll send it to you. It is important that you include a letter outlining what you hope to gain from attending Artstrek and how you see this as a positive contribution to your community.
- A follow-up phone call requesting an interview is also suggested.
- During the interview, you might offer to write an article for your potential sponsor’s newsletter or give a presentation to their group when you have completed the Artstrek program.
The following is a list of community organizations we encourage you to approach:
- Your local community theatre group
- Professional theatres
- School Boards
- Your school
- Rotary Club
- Kinsmen Club
- Lions Club
- Shriners
- Legions
- Churches
- Masons
- Knights of Columbus
- 4-H Club
- Your local arts council
- Music/Drama Festivals or Societies
- Not-for-profit Societies and Charities
- Government departments that support family development, such as Family and Community Support Services (FCSS)
- Businesses in your community that have supported the arts in the past
- A current or former employer
As well, consider approaching businesses and individuals in your community who might have an interest in seeing a young person like yourself do something they’re really passionate about.
