Performing Arts and Social Justice: The Prison Projects
Date:

Thursday January 15, 2009

Location:

Calgary

Details:

San Fransisco artist Amie Dowling has created dance programs for women who have left the sex-trade industry in Thailand and has worked as an artist-in-residence in US jails. In a public talk, Dowling shares her experience of how arts, education and social activism can intersect with marginalized communities.

This FREE event, Thursday January 15, 2009 6:00 pm, at Theatre Junction Grand is a co-presentation between the University of Calgary Urban Dance Project in the Faculty of Fine Arts and One Yellow Rabbit High Performance Rodeo 2009.

Anne Flynn, the Manager of the Urban Dance Project in the Faculty of Fine Arts is thrilled to bring Amie Dowling to Calgary as her extensive experience working in the area of dance and social justice provides parallels to the Urban Dance Project work.

“Since the beginning of the Urban Dance pilot project in 2005, we have developed dance programming in partnership with numerous Calgary organizations such as the Alex Senior's Health Centre, YWCA, Salvation Army and the Calgary Board of Education. Amie was very interested to be a guest at the University of Calgary in order to share her ideas about how dance can contribute to community development, particularly in settings where there is little access to the arts.”

Flynn continues, “In addition to her Artist Talk Ms. Dowling will be guest lecturing at a joint workshop for Dance and Drama students at the University providing U of C students with a great setting for interdisciplinary exchange.”

Name or Organization: Alberta Arts Days
Date:

September 18 - 20, 2009

Location:

Events all over Alberta

Details:

All Albertans are encouraged to mark September 18-20 in their 2009 calendars as Alberta Arts Day becomes Alberta Arts Days – a three-day celebration of the arts in our province.

Arts and culture are necessary elements of a healthy and balanced society. The province-wide celebration of Alberta Arts Days is designed to raise awareness of the value of arts in our society and provide Albertans with additional opportunities to experience and participate in our province’s culture – an important part of The Spirit of Alberta, Alberta’s cultural policy.

The move from a one-day celebration to a three-day celebration was made based on feedback received from organizations and individuals who participated in the 2008 celebrations.

Community organizations, municipalities, schools, businesses and individual Albertans are encouraged to embrace this opportunity and start thinking about ways they can participate in the 2009 Arts Days celebrations. Creative and unique partnerships are encouraged.

Name or Organization: Winter Light
Date:

January thru March, 2009

Location:

Edmonton - various locations

Details:

Based on a theme of ‘light’, Winter Light is a new celebration that showcases Edmonton as a beautiful and interesting winter city, taking joy in our unique sense of place, climate and environment.

The festival deals with the reality of Edmonton’s winter, the climate, the atmosphere, the urban scale. It recognizes winter as a time of both darkness and light – with elements of joy and survival, of isolation and gathering together, of fire and warmth, story telling and celebration.

The Winter Light festival will support the already active spirit - and spirited activities – that thrive in Edmonton - Silver Skate, Ice on Whyte, and Deep Freeze are just a few of the highlights of our 10 week winter season.

The Winter Light Festival will also spark a new series of winter experiences. These events will ignite a new perspective on Edmonton’s winter spirit and festival culture: a bright string of community gatherings and celebrations – welcoming, all-ages events that invite us to meet winter’s challenges with creativity and joy.

By pointing to the ‘light’ of winter in Edmonton, the festival offers a healthy, enjoyable alternative to the dark, potentially isolating aspects of Edmonton’s long urban winter.

Winter Light encourages us to share winter’s beauty, the fire’s warmth and our shared humanity.

Name or Organization: Urban Curvz Theatre presents Curvillicious 2009
Date:

Monday, March 30, 2009

Location:

Calgary

Details:

Urban Curvz Theatre's annual fundraiser, CURVILICIOUS 2009, is going to be
the hottest evening this winter and will be an exclusive one night only
event that you will not want to miss! We have an incredible program planned
featuring female performers from varied disciplines and experiences never
before seen on the same stage together. This stunning showcase will feature
the hilarious antics of emcee Cory Mack, the musical stylings of Jamie
Konchak, Simone Saunders, Janelle Cooper, Ksenia Thurgood and the talents of
Ann Barrett, Valerie Planche, Vicki Stroich, Shawna Lori Burnett, Karen
Johnson-Diamond, Ellen Close, Kristi Hansen, Brieanna Blizzard, Kathryn
Waters, Julie Orton and Ella Simon.

In case you haven't heard of us, Urban Curvz Theatre is a Betty Mitchell
Award winning company with a mandate to tell women's stories. We are
entering our fourth season and we advocate a Calgary theatre ecology that
celebrates the work of women artists. Our community is teaming with
intelligent and talented women such as the women joining us for
CURVILICIOUS, who are looking for consistent creative challenges. As we
endeavour to provide these opportunities we are the only theatre company in
Calgary with this mandate and as such we are filling a very important niche!

An important part of CURVILICIOUS 2009 will be the silent auction and
reception for which we are currently seeking donations at this time. If you
are able to make a donation, we will be happy to advertise for your business
at our fundraiser, as well as in our program for our April/May production of
Essay and The Russian Play by Hannah Moscovitch. Urban Curvz is also a
registered charity and if you wish instead, we can issue you a tax receipt
for the cash value of your donation. All the proceeds of CURVILICIOUS go
directly into our next production and into paying the artists working on our
creative team. Please note that absolutely NONE of the proceeds from
CURVILICIOUS go into administrative costs for running the organization or
any other channels that do not directly support the tenets of our mandate.
At Urban Curvz we have always made supporting and paying our artists a
professional rate, our main priority. Your donation helps ensure we can
continue to produce plays of high artistic merit by paying our artists a
living wage.

Thank you for your consideration. Please email me at koehler7@telus.net if
